“Basyang” seen in international Playlists on Spotify : a Wetsitunes ORegional Song Inspired by Filipino Storytelling

Wetsipon Workshop announces “Basyang,” an original song under its Wetsitunes ORegional banner. Released on May 8, 2026, the 2-minute, 20-second Children’s Music single builds on the workshop’s mission of making music inspired by Philippine folk tunes and creating engaging cultural and educational experiences for young listeners.


A New Sound for a Beloved Storytelling Tradition 

“Basyang” serves as theme music for contemporary storytelling inspired by Lola Basyang. The project links Wetsipon Workshop’s folk-tune archiving and original-music practice with a familiar figure in Philippine children’s literature. Writer and playwright Severino Reyes used “Lola Basyang” as a pen name for stories published in Liwayway; those stories later reached audiences through books, comics, television, film, and the performing arts. 

Wetsipon, extending this storytelling work through an animated folk-tale anthology. In this contemporary creative context, she may be introduced as “Baby Basyang” or “Batang Basyang,” carrying the spirit of Filipino storytelling into music and animation.

Our Music Journey So Far

W etsipon's development happened this way,  she read at around 2, could keyboard type an actual word with corresponding emoji pre-playschool (around 3,) and then struggled for her to write on pen and paper at playschool.  We had to push her for pencil skills as we did not want her to do another playschool and be accepted in Kinder. Dino all

J's 7th year creativity is a mishmash of many characters : Pandas, Larva, Sharks, Sesame Street Monsters.. but one of the stand outs for this year is her original characters from a collection she initially called Dino All!  The Dino All characters are cutified and with anthromorphic features.  Prior to this she was into dinosaurs in the encyclopedia sense where she could highlight and draw the characteristics, differences like a true geek.  And then the magic happened. Maybe because of Barney or just the fascination of the diversity.  Here are my favorites : Playing with clay.  Hints of Dino All characteristics Barneyish Can you see personality?
